5 UIL Journalism Contests Include:
News Writing (45 minutes) Challenge: Read a prompt; write facts from most important to least important.
Feature Writing (60 minutes) Challenge: Read a prompt; write a story. It has a beginning (lead), middle and end. It uses quotes generously and allows the reader to see the story through detailed description and vivid writing.
Editorial Writing (45 minutes) Challenge: Read a prompt; state problem; argue valid points without quoting; offer solution.
Headline Writing (30 minutes) Challenge: Read 7-8 sentences then write a headline. 6 headlines in 30 minutes.
Copy Editing (15 minutes) Challenge: knowledge of current events • grammar, spelling, punctuation, style • sentence structure, including passive voice and word choice • media law and ethics
