Swimming & Diving is a sports club on campus that practices off-campus at the

Carroll E. Summers Aquatic Center is located at the SAC (Student Activity Center).

MISSION STATEMENT

The USHS Swim & Diving Team is committed to continuing its tradition of competitive swimming excellence.  Through dedication and hard work, each team member is afforded the opportunity to achieve his/her fullest potential as an individual and athlete.  By providing a professional coaching staff, combined with parental commitment, we seek to provide a healthy and motivating environment of enhanced self-esteem and pride in accomplishment.  We expect swimming & diving to be rewarding and fun for all our participants.

HISTORY

From its beginning in 2017, the Panther Swim Team has been an important part of the UISD district and Laredo community.  In 2018, the Panthers took part in the La Copa swim meet at the UISD Natatorium by placing 4th in the girls' division. In 2019, Ashley Garcia earned second place in the 50-yard freestyle at the regional meet to become the first United South swimmer to earn a state berth.

Considering all of the challenging influences these young student-athletes have encountered, the Panther organization will continue a tradition of developing the best swimmers and positive contributors to our community and its tradition. In 2023, the Panther team broke 12 school records setting an all-time success in a single season.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

Committed to helping every swimmer and diver in the program reach their maximum potential regardless of their ability level through the 5 D’s model.  We want our program to touch their lives in a number of meaningful ways. We view our job as leading the swimmers on a journey of self-discovery, through the method of competitive swimming & diving.  There will be ample opportunity for learning how to set and achieve goals, and how to test one's limits.  Emphasis is placed on learning proper technique and learning to enjoy the sport.  As the athletes progress, we expect them to be able to commit to the pursuit of excellence and to exhibit good citizenship, leadership, and sportsmanship.  If we accomplish these goals, we are certain that United South will remain not only a dominant force in competitive swimming & diving but a dominant force in the lives of our student-athletes as well.

Desires - in creating a strong feeling of ambition and passion in becoming better competitive swimmers.

Discipline -  having the self-control to do what needs to be done to reach the key levels of success even if you don’t want to do it

Dedication - whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.

Determination - getting up and keeping on moving as we learn from what went wrong and adjust the course despite the obstacles.

Dominate - through team activities, individual gains, classroom growth, and overall performance.
