English 2 Course Description______________________________________________________

Reading: Students are expected to make inferences, use evidence to support understanding, analyze the author’s purpose, audience, and message within a text. They will also analyze how the author’s diction and syntax contribute to the mood, voice, and tone of a text. 

Writing: Students will compose a variety of written texts; plan writings by developing a draft, organizing structure, developing an engaging idea, revising, editing, and publishing informational texts.

Research: Students are expected to interact with sources in meaningful ways such as note taking, annotating, freewriting, or illustrating;

Listening and Speaking: Students will learn how to engage in meaningful and respectful discourse by listening actively, responding appropriately, and adjusting communication to audiences and purposes. Students will be expected to cooperate verbally in online or face to face discussions, meetings, or chat in connection to the assigned assignments.

 Oral and Written Conventions: Students will give a presentation using informal, formal, and technical language effectively to meet the needs of audience, purpose, and occasion, employing eye contact, speaking rate such as pauses for effect, volume, enunciation, purposeful gestures, and conventions of language to communicate ideas effectively.

Students will also create, edit, and revise drafts using standard English conventions, including: a variety of complete, controlled sentences and avoidances of unintentionally splices, run-on, and fragments. 

 

  • The standards are cumulative--students will continue to address earlier standards as needed while they attend to standards for their grade. 

In English II, students will engage in activities that build on their prior knowledge and skills in order to strengthen their reading, writing, and oral language skills. 

Please note: Students will read and write on a daily basis.

Textbooks:

Class Requirements: 

  1. Test (50%): Tests and exams will be derived from students’ presentations, group projects, weekly reading assignments and novel assignments, unit vocabulary and writing assignments. Tests and examinations will be administered on a weekly basis usually Fridays.

  2. Daily Grades (25%): Daily grades will include timed writing, daily grammar, vocabulary, class participation, and any other assignments done in class or sent for homework. 

  3. Nine –week Exams (Required) (25%): Both the midterm exam and final exam will be comprehensive, meaning they will include all skills, stories, and TEKS/objectives covered in class.

Standards for Student Conduct: In order for students to take advantage of available learning opportunities and to be productive members of our campus, and community, each student is expected to: 

  • Attend all classes, regularly and on time. 

  • Prepare for each class with appropriate materials and assignments. 

  • Meet district and campus standards of grooming and dress (if applicable). 

  • Absolutely no cell phones or devices may be used during class time. 

  • Respect the rights, property, and privileges of students, teachers, and other district faculty and staff. 

  • Always adhere to the dress code. 

  • Cooperate with and assist the school in maintaining safety, order, and discipline (if applicable). 

  • Avoid any violations of the Student Code of Conduct. 

  • Take advantage of the “Redo” policy: students will be able to redo assignments one extra time for a better grade except 9 weeks and Final test grades. 

Plagiarism and Cheating: Plagiarism is the presentation of someone else’s work as your own. The internet age has made it simple for students to copy and paste other people’s work and pass it off as his or her own. Imitating another student’s paper or a portion of their paper- is usually called “copying.” Neither plagiarism nor copying will be tolerated and the student will receive the grade of an “F” for that particular assignment. 

Make- up Work: It is the student’s responsibility to request any missed assignments from his teacher while or  after an absence. Students are required to make up assignments and tests after excused absences. Students who fail to make-up work within the allotted time (3 days for each day out) will receive an “F.” Students with unexcused absences have 3 days to make up assignments or tests, and any made-up assignments or tests will receive a maximum of 75.

Lectura: los estudiantes leerán y comprenderán una gran variedad de textos literarios e informativos;
Escritura: los estudiantes redactarán una variedad de textos escritos con una clara idea de control, organización coherente y suficiente detalle;
Investigación: se espera que los estudiantes sepan cómo ubicar una variedad de fuentes relevantes y evaluar, sintetizar y presentar ideas e información;
Escucha y habla: los estudiantes escucharan a los demás  y responderan a las ideas de los demás con respeto mientras contribuyen con sus propias ideas en conversaciones y en grupos; 

Convenciones Orales y Escritas: los estudiantes aprenden cómo usar las convenciones orales y escritas del idioma inglés al hablar y escribir.

  • Los estándares son acumulativos: los estudiantes continuarán abordando normas anteriores según sea necesario mientras atienden los estándares para su grado. En inglés II, los estudiantes participarán en actividades que se basan en sus conocimientos y habilidades previas a fin de fortalecer sus habilidades de lectura, escritura y lenguaje oral. 

Los estudiantes leerán y escribirán a diario.

  • Requisitos de clase:

Prueba (50%): las pruebas y los exámenes se derivarán de las presentaciones de los estudiantes, proyectos grupales, tareas semanales de lectura y tareas novedosas, vocabulario de la unidad y tareas de escritura. Las pruebas y los exámenes se administrarán semanalmente, generalmente los viernes.

Calificaciones diarias (25%): las calificaciones diarias incluirán escritura cronometrada, gramática diaria, vocabulario, participación en clase y cualquier otra tarea realizada en clase o enviada para la tarea.

Exámenes de nueve semanas (obligatorio) (25%): tanto el examen de mitad de período como el examen final serán completos, lo que significa que incluirán todas las habilidades, historias y TEKS / objetivos cubiertos en clase.

Estándares para la conducta del estudiante: Para que los estudiantes aprovechen las oportunidades de aprendizaje disponibles y sean miembros productivos de nuestra escuela y la comunidad, se espera que cada estudiante:

  • Asista a todas las clases, regularmente y a tiempo.

  • Prepárese para cada clase con los materiales y tareas apropiados.

  • Cumplir con los estándares de aseo y vestimenta del distrito y del campus (si corresponde).

  • Absolutamente no se pueden usar teléfonos celulares o aparatos durante el tiempo de clase.

  • Respetar los derechos, la propiedad y los privilegios de los estudiantes, maestros y otros profesores y personal del distrito.

  • Siempre adherirse al código de vestimenta.

  • Coopere y ayude a la escuela a mantener la seguridad, el orden y la disciplina (si corresponde).

  • Evitar cualquier violación del Código de Conducta del Estudiante.

  • Aproveche la política de "Rehacer": los estudiantes podrán rehacer las tareas una vez más para obtener una mejor calificación, excepto 9 semanas y las calificaciones de las pruebas finales.

 

Plagio y trampa: Plagio es la presentación del trabajo de otra persona como propia. Recientemente, internet ha complicado la imagen porque obtener algo de internet y presentarlo como propio sigue siendo plagio. Copiar el documento de otro estudiante o una parte de su trabajo, generalmente se llama "copiar". No se tolerará el plagio ni la copia, y el alumno recibirá una calificación de "F".
Trabajo de recuperación: Es responsabilidad del estudiante solicitar cualquier tarea perdida de su maestro mientras está ausente. Se requiere que los estudiantes repongan tareas y exámenes después de ausencias justificadas. Los estudiantes que no recuperen su trabajo dentro del tiempo asignado (3 días) recibirán cero. Los estudiantes con ausencias injustificadas tienen 3 días para recuperar tareas o exámenes, y cualquier tarea o prueba compensada recibirá un máximo de 75.
