Spanish III Language and Culture
Class Syllabus 2018-2019. COURSE DESCRIPTION
 

Third Year Spanish is planned for students who have completed Spanish I & Spanish II. Students who pass this course will be able to receive one full credit. Major Emphasis is placed in covering the Five C’s: Culture, Communication, Communities, Connections, and Comparisons through the use of skills such as reading, writing, listening, specific use of grammatical structures, ample vocabulary, and speaking in Formal and Informal Spanish registry. In addition, other objectives such as: Oral Assessment and Timed Assignments (formal-informal writing), and Special Presentations (with applied technology) are also introduced and emphasized throughout the course as needed.

COURSE POLICY
• ATTENDANCE: In order to receive credit for the course, students must be in class at least 90% of the time. If for any reason a student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility to ask and turn in any missed work within the set time provided adhering to the Student Attendance Code Guidelines.

• GRADES: Grades in the course will be based on in-class and out of class assignments as well as class participation. These may include:
1. Speaking/Listening: oral presentations, class discussions, listening comprehension passages, homework, pair/small group activities, and Audio-Visual activities.
2. Readings: comprehension assignments on literary genres, cultural, and contemporary issues and content area topics.
3. Writing: formal/informal letters, summaries, essays, etc.
4. Practice–Drills on Verb conjugations and Accents.
5. Formal written tests.
6. Weekly vocabulary quizzes.
7. Assigned Projects.

• DISCIPLINE: The United South High School Assertive Discipline Guidelines are posted in classroom and must be followed. Please see attached letter to Parents.

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES
• Understand standard Spanish on a non-technical topic transmitted clearly by means of tape recording, radio, telephone, TV, and video.
• Have a good overall comprehension of expository and narrative pieces in Spanish.
• Have a good overall comprehension of Spanish magazine and newspaper articles on various topics of general interest.
• Recognize cultural similarities and differences in reading text.
• Express oneself in a variety of writing styles for various purposes: descriptive, narrative, informative, and persuasive.
• Discuss topics of current interest and support opinions using grammatical structures.
• Oral Expressions and Discussions of current events, interests, and opinions using Formal and Informal Spanish registry.

ACTIVITIES 
• Written Activities:
1. Writing skills (main idea, topic sentence, summarization, and essay format).
2. Daily/Weekly Journal writing.
3. Written Compositions/Essays/Formal-Informal Letters: (descriptive, narrative, expositive, informative, and persuasive).
• Oral Reports: Skits, TV Game shows, soap operas, commercials, newscasts, interviews, discussion of current events, and debates on issues presented in lectures.
• Oral description and/or narration based on a visual context and/or given prompt.
• Listening Exercises: Song Lyrics, Long/Short Narratives and/or Dialogues.
• Oral/Silent/Paired/Whole Class Reading.
• Reading Comprehension: Discuss/Analyze literary elements.
• Oral and Written Practice on Verb Conjugations and Accents.
• Vocabulary Enrichment: translations, synonyms, antonyms, cognates, etc.
• Enrichment Text/Workbook exercises to master specific objectives. 

PROJECTS

4-5 major projects and other smaller projects will be assigned:
• Power Point Presentation and/or Tri-fold: Autobiography, Biography, Hispanic     Country, Given Concept, and/or Specific Topic.
• Travel Brochures on specific Hispanic countries.
• Hispanic Recipe: Oral and Written Report. 
• Legend story book along with illustrations .
• Descriptive Collage: Based on specified readings.
• Hispanic Holiday Celebration: History, Culture, Tradition, Customs, Music &         Food.
  Día de los Muertos, Navidad, Día del Amor, Día las Madres, Día del Maestro.
• Newspaper Project and/or Newspaper Mural.

*Final Exam is project based. 

*All Student-Parent Information Signature Page (Course Syllabus, Class Rules, etc.) is required to be turned in the first week of school.
